Patrimonialization of textile industrial sites: more than a decade of valuation by the communities of Tomé

Abstract

Important processes of revaluation of industrial heritage have been visualized in the city of Tomé, Región del Biobío, Chile. These actions have been implemented for more than a decade by a citizen movement that has been concerned about the protection and participative management of the textile heritage. This article considers a qualitative methodological approach to understand the main actions and proposals adopted by the community of Tomé to protect the textile heritage. This investigation proposes that there is a distinctive pattern of patrimonial appropriation. Citizen groups offer new ideas and practices on social uses and rights with respect to the patrimonial areas. These proposals have differences with respect to other ideas strongly focused on a monumentalist vision.
